In the continuing sifting out of the implications of the recent Palestinian election, Haaretz reports today that Hamas has submitted a proposal to Abbas and the PA that moves towards recognition of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State with Jerusalem as its capital, alongside an existing Israel. The story reports that the revised statement of Hamas’ objectives reflects a movement towards Fatah’s principles and was issued after
heavy pressure on Hamas leaders by Abbas during their meeting Tuesday night in Gaza City.

Did Hamas mean what Haaretz said it did?
I’m guessing that Haaretz may’ve changed their url for the Arnon Regular article you’ve linked to. The link you’re using doesn’t resolve to his article. But this one does: read the Haaretz article.
Thanks for for pointing out Helena’s valid comments about not making too much of this announcement.
I’ve written just the kind of glowing post she warns against after reading the same article. Perhaps the NY Times has not written about this story because they’re waiting to see if time bears out Regular’s optimism & whether Hamas disavows his interpretation. Hamas has been known in the past to disavow statements it makes & it might do so in this situation as well. But I hope it doesn’t.
