Thanks to Haaretz for keeping track of what our National Security Advisor is doing. Here she is, just by chance in Florida, addressing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Among other things, she suggests that those of our allies who maintain good relations with Yassir Arafat should pressure him to step down. Personally, I am no fan of Afarat and I think a lot worse things could happen than for him to step out of the picture voluntarily and make way for new leadership in the Palestinian Authority. Then all we’d have to do is get rid of Sharon, and there might be some chance of peace.
For Rice to suggest that multilateral diplomacy be used to this end represents an unusual degree of moderation for the Bush administration. Almost Kerry-esque one might say. Say, speaking of the challenger, here’s his guy, too:
Richard Holbrooke, John Kerry’s foreign policy adviser, took a similar tone when he spoke to AIPAC on Sunday. Holbrooke, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, noted that Kerry is in complete agreement with President Bush on disengagement and not negotiating with Arafat.
I guess it’s nothing new to suggest that the influence AIPAC wields in American politics is obscene. They don’t speak for me. Do they speak for you?
